Full Review
Setup
The Summer Infant day and night video requires only plugging in the baby unit, and charging the parent unit. It is very important to make sure all cords stay out of the reach of the baby to avoid a strangulation accident!
Batteries and Charging
The parent unit comes with a rechargeable NiCad battery installed. An initial 12-16 hour charging is required before use. The baby unit must be plugged in.
Range
We found the range for both audio and video to be very good up to 100 feet. However, with a 900MHz phone turned on, both audio and video suffered interference. The interference is complete up to 12 feet, strong up to 20 feet, moderate up to 25 feet, and minor up to 30 feet. There is no interference when the phone is not in use. There is also no significant interference from 2.4GHz, home routers, and some computers.
Audio Quality
The audio quality is very good with plenty of volume.
Performance and Features
This monitor is feature rich and works well.
Features:
- Parent unit has 2.5″ color LCD screen for viewing baby
- Controls for volume and brightness, important for night time
- On/Off video mode, a good feature for sleeping
- Audio/Video output jack (cord included) for viewing on TV
- Sound indicator lights provide visual display of baby’s sounds
- Easy channel changing to minimize interference
- Belt clip for portability
- Flip-out stand on parent unit, but it is hard to pull out
- Camera (baby unit) tilts and rotates for flexible viewing options
- Power cord security clips for baby safety
Design
The Summer Infant day and night video monitor has an egg-like space-age motif. The baby unit stands on it’s own, but may tip forward if the camera is angled down. Of all the models tested, this is the only one that provided security clips (6) to route the power cord away from the baby. The parent unit is easy to use, although the ‘kickstand’ is very hard to pull out.
