The Good

  • Exceptional range
  • Great audio quality

The Bad

  • Non-rechargeable battery
  • No sound indicator lights
  • No eavesdrop protection

Setup 4 stars -- Great

The Safety 1st Crystal Clear is easy to set-up and involves only plugging in the baby unit and installing the battery in the parent unit. There are two channels on each unit. It is very important to make sure all cords stay out of the reach of the baby to avoid a strangulation accident!

Batteries and Charging 3 stars -- Good

The parent unit requires a 9volt non-rechargeable battery (not included). Battery life is not specified, but a red light blinks to indicate low battery power. The parent unit can also be plugged in. However, the power cord must be removed from the monitor for battery mode to work. The baby unit runs only plugged in on AC power.

Range 5 stars -- Outstanding

Of all models we tested, this one comes closest to meeting its advertised range of 400 feet. This signal is strong beyond 200 feet. Static is very light and intermittent, and unaffected by many cordless phones, cell phones, computers, and home routers.

Audio Quality 5 stars -- Outstanding

The audio quality of the Crystal Clear was the best of any model we tested. However is clearly picked up by other 49MHz baby monitors, and is likely to be picked up by other devices in the 49MHz band, which could introduce static (see blog, and other privacy options).

Performance and Features 3 stars -- Good

This monitor is a basic, no-frills model.

Features:

  • Baby unit has a channel switch and green light to indicate power
  • Monitor placement (and cord) may be located well away (10 feet) from baby
  • Parent unit has a channel switch, and a volume On/Off dial
  • Red light on parent unit indicates low battery power
  • Belt clip for portability

Design 3 stars -- Good

The Safety 1st Crystal Clear basic features are simple, and the controls are easy to use. Both the baby unit and the parent unit stand well on their own, although their long antennas may result in inadvertent toppling.
