Setup 4 stars -- Great

The Fisher-Price Sound ‘N Lights Dual setup is similar to other monitors. A Phillips screwdriver is needed to remove battery covers from the parent units. It is very important to make sure all cords stay out of the reach of the baby to avoid a strangulation accident!

Batteries and Charging 3 stars -- Good

For portable use, the parent units require three AAA batteries each (not included). Battery life is not specified, however the units have ‘low battery’ indicator lights, and can also be plugged in for AC power use. The baby unit runs only plugged in.

Range 4 stars -- Great

While the advertised range is 400 feet, we find the reception to be excellent up to 75 feet, very good up to 100 feet, good up to 125 feet, and usable up to 175 feet. Static is intermittent, increasing with distance, and varies with orientation. Some interference is observed when another brand of 49MHz monitor is on (a neighbor for example). The parent units receives sounds transmitted from the other brand. If you are concerned about privacy, you should look for a digital monitor (for example Philips SCD 589 or Graco iMonitor).

Audio Quality 4 stars -- Great

The speakers deliver very good audio quality. Volume output is more than adequate.

Performance and Features 3 stars -- Good

This monitor is comparable to other monitors in this price range.

Features:

  • Sound indicator lights on parent units provide visual indication of baby’s sounds
  • Large soft nightlight on baby unit
  • Power and Low Battery indicator lights on parent units
  • Easy-to-use channel selection and volume controls
  • Plug-in power or battery operation for parent units
  • Belt clips for convenience

Design 3 stars -- Good

The design of the Fisher-Price Sound ‘N Lights Dual is somewhat dated. The plump, curvy shapes are functional. The baby unit is very stable on its pads and the parent units stand well on their own. Lack of battery backup power for the baby unit, and the 6″ high antennas prevent a higher rating.

I have used this model for about 2 years since the baby was born. It works very well and does what it says it should.
